Description
Offering for your consideration - A wonderful antique wax headed - double faced doll manufactured (according to and by the patents of) by Fritz Bartenstein Huttensteinach, Thuringia His patents were taken out in 1880 and 1881. His three patents were for: 1. a double faced socket head, 2. Dextrin wax for the production of heads, 3. a mechanism by which the head would be turned by cords while imitating a voice. The head revolves on a vertical axis and is mounted on a thick composition shoulder plate to which a metal hood is attached (bolted on). Both are enameled white and the bodice is formed into a molded blouse with collar. The solid wax socket head is made of the Dextrin formula and has no cracks in it. The torso is cloth covered and has a stiff interlining to house the turning mechanism and the voice box. Upper arms and legs are cloth. Lower arms and legs are wax over composition. Minor crazing of the surface wax coating on the arms and legs. One white and one pink cord with matching ivory tassels come out of the side of the torso to activate the mechanisms. Pulling one cord turns the head and pulling the other initiates the "voice" (cry) box. Written in purple ink on the cloth covered torso at the front waist is: "Patentirt in Deutchland". The pleasant face has bright blue stationary glass eyes with finely rayed irises and darker blue outer rings. Decal eyebrows, red dots at nostrils, well painted lips, four upper white teeth, and an open/closed smiling mouth. The screaming face has the same plus a very distraught expression! Excellent modeling of the tongue and oral cavity. A strip of mohair is attached to the outside of the metal hood for bangs The lace bonnet conceals the metal hood and applied hair strip.. Beautifully dressed in an original - wonderful - white cotton long gown with matching bonnet with lots and lots of handwork and lace trim! Plain white cotton split pants and chemise and a full lace trimmed petticoat. An ALL ORIGINAL doll. RARE in this size and condition. 20" tall. Circa 1880's. Museum quality.
